Sodium percarbonate releases hydrogen peroxide in warm water — the active ingredient in branded 'oxy' products, sold plain for a fraction of the price.
Method
- 1
Dissolve in warm (not boiling) water. Submerge items for 1–4 hours, then wash as normal.
- 2
Spot paste: mix percarbonate with a little water, apply to the stain, leave 20 minutes, then wash.
How to use
- Whites, tea towels, cloth nappies, sweat marks, red wine.
Tips
- Percarbonate works best above 40 °C — use the hottest water the fabric can take.
Safety
- Don't seal the soak bucket — oxygen is released.
- Not for silk or wool.
- Wear gloves; keep the powder away from children.
